WHAT IS YOUTUBE?

YouTube provides online video community services for people to discover, watch, and share originally-created videos.  The company offers a forum for people to connect, inform, and inspire others. They also act as a distribution platform for original content creators and advertisers.  YouTube also offers various supplemental features, including personal profile pages for users to save favorite videos, subscribe to other users, and create playlists, as well as search categories and specialized areas.Youtube supplies about 40% of all videos watched online worldwide for free.

THE STORY OF YOUTUBE

YouTube was founded in November of 2005 by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. All three were early employees of PayPal.  YouTube began as a venture-funded technology startup, primarily from a $11.5 million dollar investment by Sequoia Capital.  The early bases of YouTube were installed above a pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, California. But is now located in San Bruno, CA.  In November 2006, within a year of its launch, YouTube was purchased by Google Inc. in one of the most talked-about acquisitions to date.  Google purchased YouTube for 1.65 Billion dollars in Google stock.  In November 2008, YouTube reached  an agreement with MGM, Lions Gate Entertainment, and CBS, allowing the companies to post full-length films and television episodes on the site, accompanied by advertisements in a section for US viewers called “Shows“.  January 2010, YouTube introduced an online film rentals service, which is currently available only to users in the US.  In March 2010, the YouTube website launched a new design, with the aim of simplifying the interface and increasing the time users spend on the site.  As of May 2010, YouTube reported that they were serving more than 2 billion videos per day.  All Chad Hurley and Steve Chen wanted to do was share some videos from a dinner party with a half-dozen friends in San Francisco.  It was January, 2005, and they couldn’t figure out a good solution. Sending the clips around by e-mail was a bust: The e-mails kept getting rejected because they were so big.  Thus YouTube was born.

Why has the site caught on so fast?  With its simple interface, YouTube made it possible for anyone with an Internet connection to post a video that a worldwide audience could watch within a matter of minutes.  The wide range of topics covered by YouTube has turned video sharing into one of the most important parts of Internet culture.  Viewing YouTube videos on a personal computer requires the Adobe Flash Player plug-in to be installed in the browser.  Videos uploaded to YouTube by standard account holders are limited to 15 minutes in duration.  One of the key features of YouTube is the ability of users to view its videos on web pages outside the site. Each YouTube video is accompanied by a piece of HTML, which can be used to embed it on a page outside the YouTube website.  This functionality is often used to embed YouTube videos in social networking pages, blogs, etc.  Launched in 2007, YouTube’s Promoted Videos program allows publishers to place bids for keywords in order to achieve placement on relevant YouTube search results pages, similar to Google’s auction mechanism for publishers via AdWords.  With this change, now Promoted Videos are contextually matched to YouTube partner watch pages based on the content of the video and text on the page, giving publishers an extra promotional boost on video pages that are naturally related to the audience’s interest.

YouTube’s ads are overlays, transparent banners that appear at the bottom of videos about 15 seconds after the clip begins to play.  Some YouTube members were worried that Google’s advertising strategy would earn money off the videos of average members.  Google must have foreseen members’ anxiety and announced that it would share advertising revenue with video creators.  Not all videos feature advertising — only videos with a lot of views or creators with a large subscription base get to participate.  Google buys YouTube for 1.65 billion dollars worth of stock.  March 2010, 24 hours of video uploaded per minute.  May 2010, YouTube exceeds 2 billion video views per day, compared to the 100 million video views per day in 2006.  More video is uploaded to YouTube in 60 days than all 3 major US networks created in 60 years.  The number of advertisers using display ads has increased 10-fold in the past year.  Is the third most visited website behind Google and Facebook.  70% of YouTube viewers are outside of the US. Although the country with he highest population and most internet users, China, has blocked the website.  As of January 2011, YouTube has yet to report a profit.

CREATING YOUTUBE TITLES

Keep your title concise, yet descriptive

Include a keyword phrase at the beginning of the title and try to use no more than 65 characters. If you’re including your brand name, include it at the end of the title. Add the word “video” to the title, when appropriate. This can help it appear in more searches. You can always go back and change your title. Give a Description of video by giving a clear and brief overview the content of the video. Include keywords and keyword phrases. Include links at the beginning of your description, and make sure to mention the links during your video.

TAGS

    • Include tags that are related specifically to the video and general tags related to the subject matter.
    • Do not over-tag videos. Only use as many as your video needs.
    • Do repeat keywords used in the title.
    • Include location-related tags if appropriate to your business.
    • Include brand-specific tags.
  1. Before uploading your video, be sure to give it a name that includes keywords and relates to the content of the video.

    • You can edit the title and description of an existing video by clicking the gear beside Upload, clickingVideo Manager and clicking Edit beside the appropriate video.

6) Cross Post

Another tip to build up your accounts on StumbleUpon/Reddit/Digg is to cross-post the top posts on each website. For example, post the top recent posts on Digg into your StumbleUpon account, post the top recent posts on StumbleUpon into your Reddit account, etc. That way you will always have fresh material with proven popularity to post in your various social media accounts.   • A behind-the-scenes glimpse. This video features the storefront, product displays and how the product is made. Giving people an inside look at what you do is a great way to introduce them to your brand.
  • It’s educational.It shares interesting information with people, teaching prospective customers about how and where the product actually comes into existence.
  • It shows people. You can see actual people at work, demonstrating what it takes the make the product.
  • It’s easy to follow. The significance of every shot in the video is clear. The audio is clean, well-paced and easy to understand. There are no distractions, and it’s easy to see everything in the video.
  • Your webcam is a great tool for creating introductory videos, answering to frequently-asked-questions, giving sneak-peaks of products, and other videos that don’t require someone to be behind the camera because it needs to be moving around. When using a webcam, you can see for yourself what’s being recorded, which can help you ease into things if you’re not very familiar with video recording yet.
  • A digital camera is perfect for making behind-the-scenes videos, tutorials, detailed product overviews and any other video that may require you to be away from the computer, that takes a close look at something or needs the camera to be moving around. You can also use a digital camera for anything you’d use your webcam to record, and you can probably get a higher quality video out of it.
  • Many mobile devices today have surprisingly high-quality cameras, so much so that TV crews have used them for impromptu clips every now and then. Your mobile device should not be your main tool, but don’t forget about it if you find yourself faced with a great, unexpected opportunity for a video. You can record it and upload it later or even use the YouTube app to share special clips while you’re on the go. If it’s truly worth it, viewers will appreciate it.
  • Lighting is one of the most important technical aspects of any video, and can instantly make your videos more professional.
    • Test your overhead lighting, natural sunlight from windows, lamps, and a combination to see what looks best.
    • Avoid distracting shadows as much as possible.
    • If you have one, use a directional lamp to help light you up without casting too much light in the background, which will help improve the focus of your video.
      • Choose a well-lit place to record your video, and make changes to the lighting to see what results in the best quality.
      • Try using natural light, overhead light, directional lights and other lamps.
      • Try to keep color temperatures consistent. If you’re using multiple light sources the bulbs should all be of the same temperature.
  • Listen. Just as when you’re watching a video or speaking with another person, you want to be able to hear them clearly. When the audio is too low, people have to strain to hear what you’re saying, but when it’s too loud it can become uncomfortable to listen to. Make sure the volume of the sound in your video is in a nice mid-range, and try to record in a quiet space without any distracting sounds.
  • Light. You don’t need to be a professional cinematographer to light your videos. Just avoid creating a video that’s too dark or too bright. You want to make sure the area on video is well-lit so that everything is clearly visible without distracting shadows.
  • Location. Picking the right location makes every one of the Three L’s easier to achieve. The perfect location is one that’s free of any distracting objects or background elements, quiet and well-lit. Unless you’re recording a specific location (such as your work place), try to record in as clear an area as possible to keep the focus on the subject of the video.

  • Last, you can purchase a video editing program compatible with your computer. Several inexpensive programs for PCs cost between $50-$100 USD. Here is an article on Wikipedia comparing video editing programs for both Mac and PC.  Mac computers come with a built-in video editing program called iMovie.  Camtasia, by TechSmith, is a great option.

. Annotations are a little-used but powerful feature of YouTube that allow you to add notes and links to your videos.  You can use annotations to link to:

  • other videos
  • channel homepage
  • channel subscription page
  • Google+ Page
  • and other Google entities

Basically, if you want to make a call-to-action or link to relevant content in the middle of your video without worrying about people forgetting to look for the link in the description, annotations are the way to go.

  1. Access the Video Manager by selecting it from the gear menu beside Upload.
  2. Click Edit beside the video you want to add an annotation to.
  3. Click the Annotations tab.
  4. Click add annotation and use the available options to alter the text, color, size, add a link, and select the duration for which the annotation will remain on screen. Each type of annotation has specific attributes that can be changed.
  5. Click Publish to finish and YouTube will process the changes to your video.

Another great way to really get people involved is to host a giveaway.

So the best way to respond to comments is to go to your Video Manager, click Community on the menu on the left side, and click Comments. Reply to and manage all of your comments from there.

Communicate via YouTube Inbox messages. Every YouTube account has an Inbox associated with it, allowing viewers to send you a message through YouTube, just like an email.  This allows viewers to interact with you privately, which is useful in the case where they have a personal question.

  1. Plan and create a video issuing a call-to-action.
  2. Ask users to leave feedback in comments, and welcome them to send messages to your Inbox.
  3. Reply to any correspondence you receive from viewers to encourage continued interaction.
  4. Continue to think of ways you can get viewers to engage in the future.

Embrace the power of tags.

Use links.

Keep videos short.

Engage with your target your audience.  Show them first hand what you have to offer by sharing useful information, how-to guides and sneak peaks, issuing calls-to-action, and simply communicating with them.

Promote your channel off YouTube.

  • Improving the quality of your videos will be an ongoing process, so make notes for what you can do in future videos (making a clear call-to-action or a shorter,  more concise video).
  • Link to or embed your videos on your own websites. T
  • Submit to other websites and blogs.
  • You should also create and maintain a list of different blogs or online directories where you submit your videos.
    • You can grab the link to share your video by clicking the Share tab beneath a public video and either sharing it directly from a network or grabbing the URL or embed code.
    • Post your videos on your own website, blogs and social networks. Make sure to include them in relevant posts and places that people can easily find them.
    • Start making a list of blogs or communities to share your videos on. Make sure to keep track of which ones allow your submissions.
    • Encourage others to share. Utilize your social network and let your audience know that they are free to share your videos. Word-of-mouth is always fantastic.

YouTube Analytics is an analytic and reporting tool that shows you viewership statistics about your videos.  This is the statistical who, what, where, and when for your videos. You can find out the age and gender of who is watching your videos or learn how viewers found your video. This is a great way to see what webpages are successfully leading viewers to your channel. This information can help you plan:

  • Which videos to post next
  • What kinds of videos your viewers want to see
  • What demographic you should focus on targeting
    • og in to YouTube Analytics and see if you have gained enough views to generate data.
    • If you have no statistics available yet, don’t worry.  Just continue to promote your videos and check back the next week.
    • If you do have enough data, analyze it to see where your viewers are coming from. Make note of which websites you’ve shared your videos to have led viewers to your channel. This will help you understand what kind of viewers are interacting with you and your business videos.
    • Use this information to continue shaping your channel and reaching out to more viewers.

Update metadeta. Keywords and phrases can shift over time.  Update your tags and, when appropriate, video titles accordingly to keep up with trends.  Update your descriptions. Your video summary isn’t likely to change, but the links you’d like to highlight and other bits of information you share in your description should remain up-to-date with your current business goals, especially in videos that have long-term relevance.  Optimize thumbnail. While you’re starting out, you can just select a thumbnail from the ones that YouTube generates for you, but as you grow more familiar with the tools available to you, you can upload a custom video thumbnail which allows you to create a recognizable, branded look that people will see when they come across your videos.

  • As you create videos, keep a list of those with long-term relevence. For example, your intro, tutorials and any other videos that people could come back to repeatedly.
  • Check up on these videos every few months or so. It’s a good idea to do this around the same time as when you do market research so you can easily apply the changes.
  • Make updates as necessary, especially if there are any specific new links or information you want to share in your description.

Step 3: Select starting time and length (5-10 seconds)
Step 4: Right click on short video version (GIF) and save image as (There is no G+ share button. I have not tested other social media).
